Hi all

I have bought both these devices based on advice from Netgear and i am
beginning to wonder if they will do the job. I am due to get an ADSL
connection at home in the next few days and wanted to try out a config for
work so bought the above devices.

The idea was to have the DM602 as a basic ADSL Modem and the FWAG114 as a
Firewall/Router. The ISP i have uses PPPoA (ATM version) and i requested 2
valid static ip addresses. I intended to setup a Microsoft ISA server on the
same connection to test publishing Exchange and a web site but may give this
up unless soemone can tell me it may still be possible with the above as it
seems i can only use one valid ip address with this hardware.

Anyhow assuming i give up on the above for and just want the things to work
for simple access here is my problem, the DM602 supports PPPoA and PPPoE but
the FWAG114 only supports PPPoE. So I am also told i need to set it up as a
router and use a double NAT configuration (not sure but this sound likely to
cause me more problems) to get this to work and use a dynamic ip address
from my ISP, anyone shed any ideas/thoughts on this?

PS I am a MCSE and familiar with ISA server and Firewall-1 but have never
been able to get ADSL so am a bit green on this area.

Thanks for any help.

PS Please post answers back in here as i have not put in a valid email
address to avoid the spam onslaught it brings.

Hi john

In an area where I could be flamed, and am new to the group too... so here
goes!

In my experence:
I have the Netgear DG824M router/switch/firewall/AP

Notes on DG824M (copy and paste whole line below in to your browser)
http://www.netgear.com/products/deta...824M.asp?view=

No problems, I have my WEB server on the DMZ, also a Quake server running
there, and a Web Cam server running on it too..(some of the time)

I use a DNS service to forward my IP to my Hostname, no problems there at
present.. Yet as I am not in to Unix so its open to attack (but burned a cd
just in case !!)

I think that a dedicated IP addy is nice to have, but if your running a DNS
host name service which updates your IP to a name every time your IP
changes, then why have a static IP?

My opinion:
Use one account, and not a static one.. (if money is tight)
http:\\no-ip.com to register, you can download a little proggie that updates
your IP to the DNS..

I hope this was of some help?

Regards
Alan

1. UK uses PPPoA only. Is the FWAG114 intended for use here ?
2. I have dire experience with Netgear DM602, neither the software or the
hardware worked, support (in India) totally useless, had to return it.

Martin

John,

I'm using a FM114P and a DM602 (single IP address) to connect to my
ISP using PPPoA, it took less than 20 minutes to set the system up (3
hardwired PC's and 2 wireless laptops) after talking to Netgear
support.

The FM114P is set to get everything automatically, it has an has an
IP address of 10.0.0.1 and is set as a DHCP server with addresses in
the range 10.0.0.2.

The DM602 device mode is set as router, the basic router settings are
per my isp and the lan settings are "Use router as DHCP server"
ticked, starting IP address 192.168.0.2 and ending IP address
192.168.0.253. Anywhere the choice is to get automatically from ISP I
have the box ticked.

On the DM602 you can set up DMZ server, so you should be able to use
your second IP address.

As stated above, on both the FM114P and DM602 I have ticked anywhere
the choice is get automatically, which works with my ISP, which is
Plusnet; Plusnet are really Force9.
