Hi,

I have a Desktop PC connected to the Router via ethernet and a Laptop
via the wireless connection (PCMCIA wireless card in Laptop).

With this setup, I have a problem seeing either PC from the other
although I can access the internet fine from each machine.

When I swop the Laptop's Wireless PCMCIA card for a regular wired
ethernet card and plug into one of the spare wired ethernet ports on
the router I have no problems seeing either PC or accessing the
internet.

Here's the summary with the Wireless PCMCIA card in the Laptop:

- Wireless Laptop connects wirelessly to Dlink and accesses Internet
fine
- Desktop PC connects to Dlink via ethernet and accesses internet fine
- Desktop PC shows up laptop under network neighbourhood but double
clicking it gives "laptop is not accessible The network path was not
found"
- The Desktop PC's shared folders show up on the laptop under local
network but I can not open them from there. I get "\\Desktop\Folder is
not accessible. You might not have permission to use the file. Contact
the administrator of the server to find out if you have access
permissions. The network path was not found"

Pulling the Wireless card from Laptop and exchanging with NIC and
plugging into one of the unused Dlink wired ports gives a much better
story:

- Laptop PC connects via ethernet to Dlink and accesses Internet fine
- Desktop PC connects to Dlink via ethernet and accesses internet fine
- Desktop PC sees shows up laptop under network neighbourhood and
double clicking it shows up the shared folders on the laptop (I can
open files within).
- The Desktop PC's shared folders show up on the laptop under local
network and I can open them from there.
- Printer connected to Desktop can be accessed by laptop and used
fine.

Do I need to do something to make the Wireless network talk to the LAN
with this router?

Cheers in advance
E.

You don't say what you are running, but it SOUNDS like a firewall issue.
If you are running XP SP2 on the laptop, make sure that file and printer
sharing is allowed through the firewall for the wireless connection, and
do the same for any other firewall you have on the laptop, adding the
wireless connection to a trusted zone or similar.
Hope this helps

Just incase anyone else has this problem, the solution was a little
strange but it did work. I had used the "set up a home or small office
network" wizard when I had set both PC's up on the ehternet side of
the router and everything worked well.

Pulling the laptop PCMCIA ethernet card and replacing with the
Wireless PCMCIA card gave me internet on the laptop through the
wireless side of the router but no access to the wired LAN (and hence
the other PC).

Just rerunning the "set up a home or small office network" wizard
exactly as I had done before seemed to work things out. It's not the
most intuative step but afterwards I could share files and the printer
across the wired to LAN network.

It is DEFINITELY NOT the router. Running exactly the same setup here.
If he's running Sygate Firewall, he needs to select the PCMCIA NIC in
Sygate and check the file and printer sharing boxes.

To fix the problem I didn't have to do anything with the router or
firewall (I had Zone Alarm set up but it would allow the correct range
of IPs - 192.168.0.xx assigned through DHCP to connected devices). In
any case, these settings had to be fine as the PCs could share files
and the printer without problem when they were connected [via the
router] on the wired ethernet side.

The problem occured after removing the Laptop's ethernet PCMCIA card
(hence removing the Laptop from the wired LAN) and putting in the
wireless card on the laptop (to connect to the LAN via the wireless
side of the router). At this point the PCs could no longer access each
other.

As mentioned, the problem was solved in the end by re-running XP's
'create network wizard' on the Laptop with exactly the same values as
given before - ie. something along the lines of hitting the 'next',
'next', 'finish' buttons.

This isn't especially intuative as you would think the laptop would
notice the change of access medium and adjust accordingly rather
needing the user to re-run the network wizard considering a network
was already in place.
