If I allow a router such as the Dlink 624 to support 802.11b and the new G
standards at the same time, will I not be able to use WPA encryption? I
suppose that defeats the added security if I allow 802.11b access (which
uses WEP)?

The security you implement on the router has to be the lowest common
denominator of the clients with which you need to access it.

b vs g and WEP vs WPA are two separate, orthogonal issues.

So long as the b card you use is working with a WPA supplicant (such
as Funk software's wpa supplicant), you should be able to run mixed
mode just fine with WPA.
