There are these online sites that offer you their servers as off site
backups. But can one do this oneself? I am thinking in the line of a program
that is installed on both ends like one on the file server at work and one
on a file server at home. I mean if the program knows the IP of each other,
the connection is already established right? Now it is just a matter of
authentication and then the transfer of the data. Of course this being going
through the much slower Internet, it's best for this program to only
transfer files that have been modified since the last backup. I use an
automatic backup program called SecondCopy2000. It does an amazing job as a
local or LAN backup, but I prefer to expand the feature and have the data
automatically backed-up offsite as well.

There are many backup programs that will backup to Internet servers via FTP or
other protocols. Here's one such program:

There is another free backup utility named Cobian that will back up locally
or to FTP.
