DIY or wait for BT?

I've had an engineer installed ADSL line from BT(Yahoo!) for 3 years
and it's always worked perfectly. In the last couple of weeks we've
had noise on the voice line and constant disconnections of the ADSL.
The Internet connection also drops everytime anyone uses the phone. A
BT (voice-side) engineer has been out and teated the line and internal
sockets and reckons it's the ADSL modem (Alcatel frog) that's causing
the problem - as soon as you unplug it the voice line noise vanishes.
BT(Yahoo!) have advised me to try a friend's modem (no one I know has
BB through BT) or replace the microfilter - as it was enineer
installed I don't have a swappable microfilter. They're still doing
diagnostics and not coming to any swift conclusions.

I'm tempted to buy a replacement modem (cheap PCI Alcatels on eBay at
the moment) to see if that makes any difference.
Or
Replace the faceplate on the engineer installed box to see if that
does the trick. There seem to be replacements here...
http://www.clarity.it/telecoms/adsl_faceplate.htm

Does anyone have any advice as to whether these things have much of a
chance of working or should I just wait (and wait) fot the two BTs to
sort it out?

Thanks

Andy

Wait for the them to get it sorted out, it is still possible that you may
have a line problem, unfortunately with your previous engineering visit he
did not have the skills or equipment to find it.
