We are running Windows 98 with a LAN internet connection. Is there any way to
have windows automatically reconnect when the connection is lost or is a
reboot required?

That's a function of whatever device is responsible for the connection.

The Windows machine should "just work" in that configuration any time
the connection is up.

DSL or Cable connections normally do not require login.

[[ For instance, if you are connected to SBC Yahoo!, then most
possibly you are using Yahoo! system rather than Southwestern
Bell original DSL system. In that case, you can ask SBC to
assign you to the SBC original DSL connection group, which
do not require any login at all ]].

Make sure you do have a good active Firewall and AntiVirus
system running at the gateway, and the remaining home PCs.

Huh? The DSL I'm familiar with does. But you often don't see it
because the DSL "modem" handles it.
