i have users who tend to remain logged into files on network shared folders
and lock them from being backed up. so i am looking for either a script or
maybe a group policy (windows 2000 server domain) to enforce disconnection
at least nightly.

i've tried looking at net config server on both the client and server
machines. both have an idle session timeout set at 15 minutes, but that
doesn't seem effective.

any hints in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Make log on hours for your users only from 8-00 till 18-00 and activate
on all your file servers policy "Microsoft Network Server: Disconnect
clients when logon hours expire" (Computer settings -> Security
settings-> Local policy->Security options)
