Disappearing Network, but not??

Hey all, how's it going?

I have a slight problem that is not critical, but a pain at times.

First off, what equipment I have and how I have it set up.

Equipment:

*Verizon DSL (Westell Modem)

*WRT54G Linksys Router

*WPC54G Network Adaptor(Laptop) Windows ME

*3com PCI Network Card(downstairs system) Windows ME

*Integrated 3com Network Adaptor(bedroom) Windows 98SE

Now, that being said. I've been running this configuration for quite some
time now(except the Laptop Wireless adaptor which I just got installed a few
months ago.) The other two systems are wired. I've been using this setup
for internet connection only and it has worked flawlessly.

I've just got around to setting up a network to be able to move files
between systems. I got it up and running and seems to work fine(
considering I know nothing about networking ) I am quite pleased with myself
in regards that it works.

One little quark though. When I turn the router on and start up at least
two of the systems, I can go into Network Neighborhood(Win98SE) or My
Network Places(Win ME). I can see the name of the Network and when I click
on them, the names of the computers on the network. OK, so far so good then.
I was able to figure out how to share files and printers with little
help....again, ok.

Now, If I had to reboot a system for one reason or another, when I go back
into see my Network places or Network Neighborhood, nothing is their. I try
to refresh, but nothing helps. I can no longer view the network at all,
however, I can do a search and type in * for the name of a computer and the
computer names will show up and I can get into them as well. I can upload
files, download, etc. I can even click a shortcut, on the Desktop, and get
into the "C" drive of one of them and it works fine. They will just not
show up in the Networking panes( My Network Places or Network Neighborhood).

I've run winipcfg and released the connections and renewed them, rebooted,
refreshed....everything I can think of, but they will not come up,,,,,but
they are there. The only way to get them back is to shut all systems down,
the router down....everything and then reboot it all....then they will show
up.....unless I have to reboot a system, then that system will not show them
unless a complete power down is done.

Any thoughts as to why?

Thanks

Patrick

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to let you know all I've done to cut
down on any suggestions you may have that I've already done.

Welcome to Windows. On a Windows file sharing network, there's one system
designated as the 'master browser' which maintains the list of resources
available to the network. It's only updated once in a while, so if you shut
things off and turn them on again, you may have to wait for the system to
realize it no longer has a master browser and reassign one.

Take a look at
http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/window...snfinding.html under
"Browser Services" or search Google for "master browser".

With a Windows file and print sharing network, it's just better to leave
everything on. Set passwords on your file shares and use the router's
firewall to keep people from poking around in your files. And don't ever
share an entire disk - especially not the system directories.
