Is there a way to disable the web-based configuration page on D-link access
points and wireless routers from showing? I live in an apartment building
and my AP has been hacked three times. The last time I had SSID off and WEP
enabled and they still got in. Is there a way to have the configuration
page a different IP address than the gateway? Any suggestions on a way that
I can prevent the configuration page showing at all would be great. Thank
you.

I don't have D-link, I have Linksys,but isn't the web-based interface
how you access/configuter the router? It doesn't have a serial port so
you can access it that way. So if you disable the web interface you
have no way of accessing the unit to configure/troubleshoot/change
settings.

Are you really sure it is someone else changing your settings
or just a defective AP that cannot save or retain its settings.

If you set WEP on, you should not be hacked that fast, it takes time,
especially for a small network with low traffic, to crack WEP even if it is
not perfect.
And I don't think you can set the AP web page to a different address unless
your documentation says otherwise.

I don't know what kind of AP or router you have, but on my DI-774 you select
the "home" tab at the top of the screen, and the "lan" tab on the side. This
lets you change the IP address and subnet mask of the router as seen by the
wireless and directly-connected Ethernet hosts.

What you (and I) really want is a button to make the admin page inaccessable
from wireless clients, so that all admin is forced to be via wired Ethernet
only. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be supported. I agree with an
earlier poster that MAC filtering is your best bet.

BTW, it only takes 5 - 10 million messages for WepCrack or AirSnort to break
128-bit WEP. If you are streaming video, it can take as little as a
half-hour.

MAC filtering *should* keep outsiders off your AP, unless they have some way
to configure their WiFi adapter to masquerade one of your supported MAC
addresses. That seems unlikely.

Select Home from the top group of tabs and then select LAN from the
buttons on the left. You can change the IP address that way, I believe.
Make sure you document this.

With my DI-614+ I go to the tools tab and on the first page (Admin) there is
Remote Management, click Disable.

Then you should only be able access your configuration with a wired
computer.

At least on the DI-774, "remote management" refers to management access from
the Internet - i.e., from the WAN side (cable/DSL). This allows you to set
up an IP address and port that you can use if, for example, you're traveling
and for some reason want to administer your router. You definitely want to
turn this off, but it's a different issue from access by wireless clients.

First thing is change your password to something that has numbers AND
letters in it! DO NOT make it something that is in a dictionary!
Do the same thing for the WEP access code!

on my 614+ you can set the ip of the router to anything in the
192.168.0.xxx.
You go to lan settings from the main page.
