Direct Parallel connection to XP machine not recognized

The old Win 98 machine is connected to the new XP portable by direct
parallel connection. Both machines say connected and the little icon is on.
XP is guest, 98 is host. I can't find the 98 on Windows XP explorer,
shared files,
network or anywhere else. Where is it? I want to one time transfer files
from an old machine
and am not interested in buying any more cards or cables. If it's connected
it should
transfer - or it ought to, but how?

Thanks,

Henry
