direct connections

I wish to create a direct connection via ethernet between
two computers. Can this be done with just one ethernet
cord, or do i need a hub/router?

Theoretically it can be done, but some network cards don't like the special
crossover cable that must be used to do it. A hub or router is a better
choice.
