Direct connect problems

My Dell Latitude laptop is giving me fits with direct connect.
I'd like to connect to my old laptop to tranfer all files and then retire
the old one, and I'd like to DC to my home machine to trade and back up
files, but I can't get the Dell to open the parallel port. Keep getting
error messages that say the port is not configured or some such crap.

Also, tried to use the infrared port. My old laptop can see the dell, but
the dell cannot see the old laptop. As well, when I try to use direct
connect via IR port, niether machine shows the IR port in the configuration
menu.

Can't "win" for tryin'. Any help out there?

Hey hey
Windows sucks and thats the world....Linux is no better if
that helps.....Mac rules (but i dont have one)......

The problem....oh....yes....
-What you can do if you have a lot of time and very little
to transfer is to use a dos program and a null modem
seriell cable (really slow...200mb----6hrs or more)
-The other oppertunity is to use a network. This is an
expencive methoud if you don't have a nettwork card.
-Or you can borrow a zip drive (if you have usb). This is
the smartes allternative.

Keep trying

I think DCC works with parallel or serial ports only. And you must use a
special cable, not just a standard serial or parallel printer cable. And
last, you may have to go into your BIOS to set the port to a proper
configuration. I had an older laptop that had a bug in one of the port
modes.

I know it's no consolation, but a couple of years ago I tried
unsuccessfully to do something similar. My best efforts failed,
and I've been using computers since the 1960's, and PCs since
they first appeared on the scene.

I hope you have an alternative (e.g. over a network, or via CD-R).

BTW, I finally succeeded by using an old copy of LapLink, so I know
my problems weren't with the hardware.
