direct connect to modem works but not router

I recently formatted my win 98 computer and reloaded
netgear router (RP614) drivers etc. I can get online
perfectly when I connect directly to the modem but not
through the router. (Its very slow and sometimes never
opens a page. Sometimes ping works and sometimes it times
out... )I have been on netgear's tech support more hours
than I care to admit and was told router is set up fine
and I needed to reload the browser(IE version 6 service
pack 1). Did that, same problem. Now told my winsock is
bad. I can get online fine with a direct connection to my
modem so I doubt that that is the problem. I have another
win 98 computer and a sony 2 running through the router
fine. Not sure what to do next. Any ideas??? P.S. This
computer was running through the router 5days ago, before
I reformatted it. I also reformatted it abuot 1yr ago and
all went well to reconnect.

I forgot to mention this is a cable modem and the router
is NOT wireless. My ISP is Road Runner.
