Direct Cable Connection between Win 98 and Win XP

There is a Direct Cable Connection between Win 98
computers and between Win XP computers, eg through the
parallel ports, and the detailed methods are different

But can a Direct Cable Connection be made between a Win 98
computer and a Win XP computer, and which should be the
host?

This is required for a one time transfer of files between
an old Win 98 laptop and a new Win XP laptop.
