Hi
please dont send me to net4nowt or adsl guide I been looking at them non
stop for weeks...and this is why.

I have been with NTL for donkeys years and dont like to keep changing - but
NTL broadband is not available in my area but BT line ADSL is available very
soon.
I have been looking at Nildram, Eclipse, plusnet and Pipex closely. I have
my computer, my kids PC and a satellite dreambox which I would like to
network thru a wireless network.so I dont need any "free" modem.
Obviously the cheaper the better but not at the expense of services so VALUE
would be more appropriate word. I would be very grateful if anyone could
spare a few minutes to type their recommendations as this choice will
probably be the last one I make on provider for another 5 years
thanks for your time
Roy

I would not hesitate to recommend plusnet. I cannot fault them
technically, and they respond quickly and honestly to questions and
requests. People say that their news server is patchy for binaries, but
that is not an issue for me.

Hi
thanks for reply m8, tbh Plusnet is probably going to be winner - however
easy start option looks like best option - but I dont want modem.
cheers

So you have made your choice of ISP; and your reasons were?

Perhaps you would care to indicate which modem you are going for? and
why?

Then someone, somewhere will say its a terrible choice and put there
twopennyworth in with their pet suggestion.

To be honest with you asking for recommendations for an ADSL provider
is like asking which religion you should be with; eveyone has their
own beliefs.

So turn the question on its head and ask which you should not go with.
I think the list starts with AOL, closely followed by all the BT
flavours. Since neither of these were not on your shortlist there's
no point in going further on that one.

As for modem choice, you would have to look quite extensively for
anyone to argue against having a Draytec unit, it costs more than most
but represents a good long term investment.

Hi

thinking it had a modem also so trying not to make anymore stupid mistakes.
thank you for your time and advice

I assume you mean DrayteK, and you don't have to look very hard, just a
quick look at the SEG UK forums to see MANY people (including myself)
having problems with the firmware on these devices, basically the
firmware is quite buggy, although getting better, but on a supposidly
mature product like the 2600We, you don't expect lockups....

If I had paid £70 for the wireless router, then I could pass it off as a
bad buy and cheapo kit, but when you buy something supposed to be top
end kit, you don't expect these kinds troubles.... I may have well as
paid 50% of the price and got similar problems with a Netgear or a
Belkin....

As for ISP's you can't go wrong with PlusNet, Service and Price......

In terms of "value" hardware for a home ADSL set-up, I'd forget about any
ISP included USB modems etc. I use one of these SMC 7404WBRA All-In-One type
units http://adslguide.org/hardware/review...c_7404wbra.asp . It
has everything a typical home user needs and more, for a very cheap price
(108 quid ex VAT for mine). Only possible problem is your printer would need
to support non bi-directional parallel port operation for full printer
functionality when using its built in print server (there are some that
don't).

Strange. I've had no problems at all with mine.

Rod.
