I reloaded Windows 98 Se on a Mercury motherboard that has
an on-borad network adapter (Via PCI 10/100Mb Fast
ethernet adapter). The adapter could not be detected by
windows during the installation.

I then searched the internet as I did not have the
original installation disks. I found a (Via Rhine II Fast
ethernet adapter) the most recent driver for windows 98
se. On installing this driver, although there were no
conflicts with other hardware, on configuring the network
setting my computer could no longer see others or others
see mine.

How do I correct this fault???

You probably need to be sure those are the correct drivers for your network
adapter. The motherboard manufacturer should have them or they should have
come on a CD with the motherboard.
