Different ISP's - where exactly does their kit come into play

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can clarify where exactly one ISP's kit takes over
from another ISP's kit i.e moving to Zen from BT.

Is Zen's kit in the exchange for your wires to be ported over to, or
do you still have to suffer any problems (pausing, stopping, packet
loss) that may be due to BT equipment before it gets to Zen?

Zen don't have any kit in your local exchange so it will make no difference.

'Fraid you still have to suffer Bt's network until you get to the POP of
your selected ISP.

This, of course, is not true if you ellect to go with a LLU ISP where
they do have limited capacity in each nominated exchange (but not all).

Have a look at http://www.adslguide.org.uk and view the How it Works
section, that will help you to understand where everything is.

Essentially, the ADSL signal is a last drop to you, this is generated by
a line card at the exchange in a DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access
Multiplexer) that turns this and all the other ADSL users' signals at
that exchange into a digital bitstream that is carried on an ATM high
speed network and routed to your ISP's gateway (otherwise known as a BT
Central in some cases).

When you migrate, all that happens is that the packets to and from you
are routed to a different BT Central and the authentication mechanism
that lets you log in to your ISP's system has its entries updated so
that the correct authentication database is used.

If you use an LLU provider, then the ISP's kit *is* installed in the
exchange and then routes out over their own links not via BT (although
even that isn't always true).

If all that helps, all well and good, but ADSLGuide will show your a
little more detail.

in Zen's case there is a ATM virtual circuit from your exchange all
the way to Zen, provided by BT, then a Zen router appears as the first
pingable TCP/IP router.

With BT using "BT Central Plus" the same exchange equipment feeds into
a different virtual circuit in the BT network that is full of pingable
bits of BT kit, as the whole IP transit thing is done by BT.
