i have a connexant wireless adsl router and use connexant wireless laptop or
pc cards on my 4 pcs/laptops. The range is very poor - basically around 10m
maximum in the house, which is pretty standard construction, whereas the
literature claims that these systems will achieve a lot more. I have noticed
that the speed is always 11mbs, and does not switch down to lower speeds
when signal is poor. Even when I set it to run at low speed - say 1mbs, it
still does not increase the range. What am i doing wrong?!

thanks

probably nothing, use a util like NetPerSec and ftp some data around between
your PCs, this will tell you what you are getting,,
As for 10M, are your Antennas got clear LOS and nothing around them (Fresnal
Zone), check for other 2.4Ghz appliances, such as Bluetooth, Microwaves,
Baby alarms etc etc,
Should have done a proper site survey first!

Steve,
I forgot to add this bit:

The designers of the antennas for Personal Computer Memory Card
International Association (PCMCIA) cards face a real problem. It is not easy
to form antennas onto the small circuit board inside the plastic cover that
protrudes from the end of a PCMCIA card. Rarely do antennas built into
PCMCIA cards provide adequate coverage, especially when a client is roaming.
The polarization of PCMCIA cards and access points is sometimes not the
same, which is why turning your laptop in different directions generally
improves reception
