I have just one server win2k. It`s the domain controler, dhcp, wins, dns,
file and print server. It`s working well. It has a 3Com NIC 100/1000. All
the clients using windows xp with onboard (asus motherboard) 10/100 nics.
It`s a newspaper, we dont run anydatabase, but we use programs like
coreldraw or adobe indesign, the files created with this programs are
opened, saved and stored direct into the server.

Whe have 20 clients conected together in a switching hub from ENCORE. This
hub has 24doors for 100kpbs and 2 doors for 1000kpbs. The clients are
conected at 100 and the server is conected at 1000.
I tink that, sometimes, the network is slow, if i buy a 3COM SWITCH will the
performance be fast?
The encore hubis very cheap and 3COM switch is so expensive.
3 com has memory inside, that I don`t know how it works and they are also
management. These 2 funcionalities i don`t understand yet. Are they
important for me now?

Well,..."faster" anyway. Doing file copies is the one way that hits a
network bandwidth the heaviest. Nothing puts the load on it that a file copy
does, short of maybe a broadcast sorm from a bad nic.

Hubs share the bandwidth with all ports and every port/cable sees the same
traffic (that bad). A Switch deidcates full bandwidth to every port and
separates every communication session so that only the two ports involved
actually see the traffic while all other ports do not get involved.

Switch do "switching" of the traffic based on MAC Addresses (hence the name
switch). It is too much to explain in detail. You would probably want to
take networking classes to get a full understanding.

Performance will improve with a Switch,...but file copying still creates the
heaveiest load you can create. Some people think that streaming video or
audio does that,...but it does not,...file copying does. There is no
"panacea".

3COM expensive??? They are some of the cheaper switches out there. Any way,
management on a switch refers to software that runs on the switch that
allows you to do things like configure VLANs, SNMP, telnet/SSH, dot1x, etc.
The memory inside allows you to run this software and it's also used for
things like maintaining the CAM table.
