A friend of mine only has dialup internet service, but wants to have
wireless internet. Basically he wants to put a computer where there isn't a
phone jack, and he doesn't want to run a wire. I have an old d-Link
wireless router, and I can get a cheap 56k externel modem. Is there a way
to connect the two, or is there a better way to do this? I'd like to keep
expenses to a minimum. Thanks.

3 words internet connection sharing in the computer with the modem.

Thanks for the info, but as I said, he wants to put a computer where
there isn't a phone jack, so the computer with the modem doesn't have an
internet connection to share.

He has a phone jack on one side of the room, his computer on the other,
and the landlord won't let him put another phone jack on the computer
side of the room. He also doesn't want to string a long phone cord
across the room. He wants a phone jack attached to a wireless router,
and his computer with a wireless card in it on the other side of the
room. Is this possible?

Wouln't the simpler solution be to plug into the existing jack, then route the
wiring underneath the baseboard (or clip it tot he baseboard) to the location of
the computer, rather than "across the room"?

Another (not so good) alternative is desribed in

Cheers!

You can buy (Radio Shack) here in the US a wireless telephone modem. I
used one for my TiVo before I connected it to my broadband LAN.

I would not recommend this. This will slow the connection to a near halt. If
at all possible, you should go with highspeed internet through dsl or cable.
This will enable you to link multiple computers together in a network.
