I am shortly going to move house. In my current home I use BT Home Highway
but when I move I want to go broadband. I probably won't get an install date
until after I have moved in, so my question is - my modem is currently the
one used for Speedway (ie. the Home Highway ISDN line) - will it work ok on
an ordinary BT line to give me a normal dial up connection while I wait for
my broadband install? or will I have to shell out on a common and garden 56k
modem until the install arrives? Thanks - sorry if it's a bit off topic.

No, and yes.

I think you will, but it won't be entirely a throw-away item, at least
not at first.

At the very minimum it helps to have an alternative means of accessing
Internet and Usenet resources while you're setting up a broadband
connection -- I think most people find a few glitches to work out
before getting BB connection solid -- and most people, I think, keep
the modem handy as a back-up for possible outages.

(That said -- and although I have a modem somewhere that I could hook
up in an emergency -- I've not had my computer linked to a phone line
for over a year now, just to the ntl cable.)

Other continuing uses for a 56k modem include faxing direct from the PC,
SMS texting from the PC, and dialling for voice calls.
