Is this an appropriate group for asking why, when the dial up
procedure is successful, my internet apps don't communicate with the
internet? (The same true of broadband, via my router).

This has happened after doing partition manipulations of my hard disk,
in which there was a change of partition letters, handled by a device
for finding and renaming HDD references (Partition Magic's, Drive
Mapper)

Reversing my partioning procedure restored communications and it seems
probable that Drive Mapper saw a 'd:' which it saw as a HDD reference,
changed it to 'e:' - and shouldn't have!

I would find it helpful if I had some idea of what particular Windows
process has been harmed by this error. Is it something to do with
'sockets'. In which case, which files or references are involved and
is there a procedure for repairing them - for example, by running a
repair process or by a limited reinstallation of some component(s)?
(I recall running a downloaded file to upgrade sockets in win95)

I ask, not least because of the problem I have described above, but
also because a friend has similarly lost internet access after a
'cleanup' process - this time, whilst getting other software (Nero
Burning) to work correctly.

I'm ignorant of the network technology but perfectly willing to put in
the time and effort to understand - a bonus of retirement

Many thanks for your suggestion. I'm out of the problem myself but
not so my friend who also will be grateful for your help.

I'll report back, probably tomorrow.

Later than planned, I can now report that the change of winsock went
as described in the web article but made no difference to the prior
situation, namely, that dial up works but there is no connection made
by standard internet applications.

Does anyone else, here, have an idea?

No and yes, respectively. In fact a complete reinstall of IE6 has
been carried out. The settings in Control Panel, Network, have also
been checked as appropriate with dial up-TCP/IP in place as normal.

Thanks for your continued help.

I forgot to add the following:

I've done extensive searches of the ngs and internet generally and
have found a number of references to this situation. Quoting from one
such reference:

'To solve the problem, I have tried a number of things. I have
deleted the dial-up connection and tried with a new one. I have
removed and reinstalled dial-up networking. I have installed Windows
"over the top". I have upgraded to windows ME. I have removed and
reinstalled the modem drivers.

I have now seen this problem on 3 different computers with 2 different
ISPs. I have heard that conflicts with anti-virus software can cause
problems like this, so I removed Norton Systemworks 2003. ...... The
only way I have ever been able to "solve" this problem is by
reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows from scratch"

Faced with such a valiant and unsuccessful rescue effort it comes, I
suppose, as no surprise that none of the reports of this problem
appears, from the records, to have been solved by the one or two stabs
at a solution, eg. 'sounds like a corrupt or missing .dll file, most
likely rasapi32.dll.'

I find this situation remarkable after six years of massive world-wide
use of this operating system. Don't you all?

wow you have been down a long road !

I'm always amazed at the number of problems encountered by different
variations of installed software.

one thing I know has caused me great headaches in the past has been Norton
and especially "system works"...the products don't ever seem to uninstall
everything. there are some "cleaners" available on their website to cleanup
after an uninstall (what does that say).

you may want to look into that ...beyond that ...if you have any firewall
software , get rid of that for trouble shooting also (uninstall don't
disable)

I don't get here everyday , but keep posting if you have questions
....someone will be by :>
