Dial-up networking connection status

I'm an experienced Windows user and a Linux newbie. I recently modified my
PC into a dual-boot Windows-Linux configuration. The Linux distro is Fedora
Core 5 (FC5). My internet connection is dial-up only, using an external USR
5686D modem.

I've been online with FC5, and haven't noticed a way of monitoring the
status of my dial-up connection. I'm looking for the same functionality
provided by the Windows "Dial-Up Networking icon". That is the tiny image of
two computer screens found on the extreme right hand side of the Windows
taskbar. By right clicking that icon, I can tell how long I've been online
and how many bytes have been transferred. Also, by hovering the cursor over
the icon, I can see my initial connect speed.

Is there an equivalent in FC5? ("ifconfig" will give me bytes transferred.
I'm most interested in connection elapsed time. My ISP terminates a
connection after eight hours.)

(I can get the information after the fact by using the modem post-call
diagnostic report. But I also need the information while the connection is
still active.)

Try "kwifimanager"; is a kde utility, but runs smootly under gnome and
others window managers.

Try gkrellm -- it does wonders. There's a 'Net' built-in plugin that
includes a timer. Plus a thousand other things.

HTH.
