uk.net.providers (and alt.internet.providers.uk which is a bit old, but worth
searching with <http://groups.google.com> for particular questions you might
ask) Also, for ISDN, one group tended to be used (whichever ISP) and that was
freeserve.help.isdn (but I don't check it nowadays and it might be under some
'wanadoo' newsgroup or have gone away completely). Peter Morgan.

PS You'd be amazed at the off-topic trash (about browsers, etc, etc) which has
been asked in this newsgroup... so don't feel too bad - at least if it is
something about ISPs (and you get no joy in u.n.providers) - come back :-)

Thanks poster; not found that in the list! It's a bit quiet over there
isn't it - I just want to know whether V44 compression is all it's
cracked up to be and whether any providers offer it.

My guess is that there might be more chance of an offical representative from
an ISP looking in the u.n.p rather the a.i.p.u (I don;t think yours was cross-
posted, and there is 'life' in u.n.p but both are fairly quiet for longer and
longer periods nowadays.

FWIW, you might want to check/search for V44 / V.44 on www.ISPreview.co.uk and
www.net4now.co.uk and maybe even some of the magazine sites, www.webuser.co.uk
and so on. There may be a couple offering V.92 but I can honestly say I don't
recall anything about V.44 in recent years. Yahoo has a list of magazines :-)

At http://www.vnunet.com/news/ a quick search for you got to old articles:
2001-06-29 http://www.vnunet.com/2072063
2000-07-04 http://www.vnunet.com/2113019

And to think, Bangor was one of the areas which had EU funding to get ADSL
early. I guess you mean somewhere rural if you aren't in Bangor itself, or
somewhere else in the country. Good luck (or Home Highway!) Peter, Wrexham.

Thanks poster - I'll check up on those.

Yes, I live 5.25 km from the exchange plus wire meandering. A DACS is
there I think to improve voice quality. The EU funding is more ironic
than you think - we were asked just after the kit had been fitted to
verify its presence and serial numbers to enable the grant to be paid!
Thanks again.

Phil
