A dial-up error (645) during a connection attempt gave instructions to
delete the modem dial-up adapter and reinstall.

Deleted adapter only find no equivalent to reinstall.

Where do dial-up adapters come from?

Where did you delete the adapter from? Tell us, in as much detail as possible,
how you did that.

The nuclear option is as follows: Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows
Setup tab > select Communications > press Details button. Uncheck Dial-Up
Networking. OK your way out and restart the machine. Go right back to that same
item and re-check it, then OK your way through the installation, restart.
However, this may delete your DUN connectoid (the script that tells DUN what
phone number to dial, what your username/password is, etc.) so make sure you
have all that info handy.

Otherwise, it may simply be a Network item that needs to be reinstalled. Go to
Control Panel > Network and tell us what's listed there in the upper pane, and
what your Primary logon is.

Aside: The default settings for DUN connectoids in Win98 may cause problems. You
want to go into the connectoid's Properties, on the Servers tab, and uncheck
"Log on to Network" and also uncheck all except TCP/IP in the lower section of
that tab.

Sorry. Emailed by accident.

Thanks for reply. I've solved the problem, but was probably more lucky than
anything. A few details follow for your interest.

Network > Configuration

Select Dial-up Adapter entry, Select Remove.

Missed the last bit first time round, so then the question was "Where the
hell has the MyComputer > Dial-upNetworking gone?!", but anyway, got that
back...

Luckily this did not happen

And when I finally twigged on to checking the Dial-Up Networking entry as
you pointed out above, not only did the
Network > Configuration > Dial-up Adapter reappear but it worked as well
:-))

This seems to be my default, but thanks for info

I wouldn't cal it the "default". As you note, your DUN connectoid wasn't
destroyed, so its settings were not changed. If you manually create a new DUN
connectoid, you'll find that "Log on to Network" is enabled by default, as are,
usually, the other protocols.

Glad to hear you're back in business.

You're right. Tried creating a new one and lots of default check boxes
enabled including "Log on to Network".
