Dial Up Account - wireless between Laptop & Phone Socket??

Hi,

Probably a simple trivial query, but I really dont understand this
wireless stuff:

My other half has a simple dial up connection with Tiscali, and wants to
be able to use her laptop from anywhere in the house. It's a Toshiba
with an internal modem.

Is it possible to get something with an aerial to plug into the Laptop
modem socket, and something else with an aerial to plug into the phone
socket? If so, what?

If this isn't how it works, what does she need?

Many thanks

3Com sells something called their OfficeConnect LAN Modem. However, it's
extremely pricy (~$300) since most people will not buy such a product. In
addition, you would still need to get a wireless access point and card for
the laptop (~$400 total).

Wireless these days is much faster than any modem in the traditional sense.
Thus, if you got a traditional modem that allows wireless access, your modem
would be >100x slower than the slowest current wireless standard (0.05Mbit/s
vs 10Mbit/s). It's possible that a product that would match your
requirements might have been sold some years ago and would be relatively
cheap on Ebay. However, I do not know of such a product.

Your best bet is to get DSL (if you phone line supports it) or cable
broadband. Some providers will include the modem (cable modems usually run
under $100 if you have to buy one; DSL modems tend to be more expensive), to
which you can connect a wireless access point. You can then add a wireless
access card to the laptop. Some access card/access point combinations sell
for under $100.

Of course, the cheapest solution is to get a long telephone cable and skip
wireless (I was using a long ethernet cable for a while). However, I'm not
sure that your other half would appreciate that.

Hmmm, I don't know if this exists either.

I do remember seeing something about it a couple of years ago, but that
would probably only really work with voice. If you have your PC on all the
time, you could use a proxy server such as browse gate. www.browsegate.com.
This will let 2 machines share a connection over a network. You would also
need two wireless cards / usb adapters for your PC's.

<g> Correct!

Since posting, I've found, and ordered, a BT On Air wireless telephone,
which also has a USB wireless modem. Here's hoping it works.

DSL is not suitable for her as she doesnt use the net much, and uses a
free ISP, so she just pays for phone calls during time online.

Thanks for the thoughts.

SMC7004AWBR Wireless router with an RS232 modem port for failover dialup
connection when broadband is not available. Can be used for modem only, also
has an integrated print server and 3 port switch.

Needs a real external modem. Not a winmodem. One used on ebay for $80.00.

Thanks for looking - I'm in England, so not sure it would do the trick
here.

However, I'm hoping I've found the thing which does the trick.
