Diagnostics

Can anyone recommend a good on-line guide to the meaning, use and
interpretation of connection diagnostics?

I've experienced a few sporadic, relatively short-lived, periods of
repeatedly dropped connections. The worst, this morning, produced
about half a dozen disconnections from Virgin, each after just a
few minutes up time, and at least one desynchronisation of my exchange
connection.

A look at my BT Voyager 205 DSL Debug program's DSL Failure/Count
screen showed, at one time, the CRC Local and HEC Local counts in
the Remote column steadily ticking up. Though was this perhaps just a
consequence of the disconnection?

If it weren't for the very sporadic nature of the problem (eg I was
connected all day yesterday with only one disconnection, and have had
none for the last 90 minutes), I'd be inclined to at least suspect my
wiring. But the intermittence, and the fact that it's twice happened
fairly early in the morning, makes me wonder if it's due to some
temporary external glitch/interventions/system problem.

Whatever, it would be good to have some more understanding. And if I do
have to ask for investigation (AIUI, it's my ISP I'd have to approach)
I'd very much like, after my experiences so far with Virgin CS, to do as
much of the work as possible myself.
