Just got one of these a couple months ago. Now D-Link says they are
capable of speeds up to 108 Mbps. Can mine do that with a firmware
upgrade or is mine already obsolete?

Its a firmware upgrade for the revision C model (1 antenna), there is no
upgrade available yet for the revision A & B models (2 antennas)... The
firmware is specific to the model you have...

I did some research and found that out. My verison's upgrade will be
available later.
The upgrade for my laptop's card was available so I upgraded it. I can
connect with WEP or no encription but not with WPA, which I was able to
use before I did the upgrade. That doesn't make any sense does it?

Also, when these companies use these compression techniques to double
the speed or whatever, how compatible are they with other companies
techniques? What I mean is, should I be staying with the same company
when buying the router and the NIC to ensure that these speed doubling
upgrades will work or can I get hardware that is the best price and
expect compatibility? What was the case with 802.11b when similar
techniques were used?

D-Link's "4X" mode isn't compatible with others hardware, it can be
assumed
that "108 MB" won't be either...
