di-614+ and dwl-800ap+ give out different IPs?

I just discovered it and it doesn't make sense to me.

I can connect to the 614+ router and the dhcp gives my laptop an IP of
something like 192.168.1.XXX and subnet 255.255.255.0 which is fine, and
I can connect to the router's setup software.

Now, if I plug in the 800+ extender in repeater mode and connect, I get
the same network to chose from so that's working, but when I check my
network settings it's handed me something like 169.254.4.xxx with a
subnet of 255.255.0.0 and I can't connect to the router's setup using a
browser.

I don't understand what determines the IPs I can get if I connect
through the range extender and not directly to the router itself.

How should this thing be configured?

The 169.254.0.0 network is used by Microsoft operating systems and assigned
to hosts that fail to obtain an IP address via DHCP. So this is an
indication that your laptop can't reach the DHCP server. Since the DHCP
server is in the router, it means the laptop can't reach the router.

Ok, hm... The thing is, if the range extender can't contact the router
then I shouldn't be able to connect to the network at all. It seems
pretty fool-proof to setup the 800ap+, all I did was enter the ethernet
mac-address of the router. It's hard to tell if it's actually extending
the signal from the router or not though.

I'm connecting using a macos 10.3.3 if that makes a difference.

It is important to NOT use Windows to configure your wireless network, but
to use the DLink Utility. When you setup the Repeater make sure that you
get the LAN MAC Address from the Status tab of the router's web
configuration utility and enter it in the Remote AP Mac Address field in the
Repeater's web configuration utility.

It may be necessary to set a static ip address on your wireless client.
However, you stated that the ip address you received when connecting to your
router is 192.168.1.xxx. The default ip address scheme of a DLink router is
192.168.0.1 and the default address of the Repeater is 192.168.0.50.

What brand of wireless card are you connecting with? The Dlink 800 is
very particular about the hardware it will work with, especially in
repeat mode. Check the dlink website and make sure your card is
compatable, if it isn't you can play with all day and still not get it
working. As you can connect to the router which is not near as picky
as the AP, I suspect this may be your trouble.
