As previous post - I was going to get a wireless router - but after some
thought - decided to go for separates.

So - router - opting for Di-604

Now - Access Point - DWL 900AP+

Good ideas or is there better options.

I was thinking with a separate AP - I may get better range than a combined
wireless router. Especially as I have a duct where I can put the Access
point in my loft - and feed the cable to my pc on the ground floor. Also -
this AP - 900+ can be used a wireless bridge and client at a later stage
when I again upgrade.

Is this a good or abd idea or should just opt for the Di-624 or Netgear
WRG614, or Linksys wrt54g wireless router.

Scott

Running wire in a duct is NOT code! Unless you use special grommets to
run the wire into and out of the duct. It is a MAJOR source of fire
transfer from floor to floor!
I know LOTS of people do it but don't! Take it from a firefighter!

You have much better choices regarding placement for best radio coverage, true.

You could use an external antenna, but most coaxial cables (connects the
antenna to the access point) are pretty lossy at 2.4GHz so it's easiest
to just use a long ethernet cable instead.

Or, I just spent US$102 on some antenna cables made from a fairly low loss
coaxial cable (RG-142B)...

If it's made of metal it'd be best to stay away from it, as it will affect
the radio signal.. or at least not have it between the ap and clients.

You must also use a fireproof cable if it is run inside the duct.

D-Link has a power-over-ethernet adapter that would be very useful here
too. It transmits the power over the unused pairs in the ethernet cable.
