You have much better choices regarding placement for best radio coverage, true.
You could use an external antenna, but most coaxial cables (connects the
antenna to the access point) are pretty lossy at 2.4GHz so it's easiest
to just use a long ethernet cable instead.
Or, I just spent US$102 on some antenna cables made from a fairly low loss
coaxial cable (RG-142B)...

If it's made of metal it'd be best to stay away from it, as it will affect
the radio signal.. or at least not have it between the ap and clients.
You must also use a fireproof cable if it is run inside the duct.

D-Link has a power-over-ethernet adapter that would be very useful here
too. It transmits the power over the unused pairs in the ethernet cable.
