I understand how names are resolved using
static ip addresses, but with dhcpcd I am
completely confused.

How does a computer get its name using dhcpcd?

Hi,

DHCP with DNS is called Dynamic DNs (DDNS). The DHCP Server is then updating
the DNS server (it has to bo authorized, of course). In the Micky Soft
world, the W2k Clients and newer do the updating themselfes. Think about
using the internet. Your provider gives you an ip and a computername, which
is usually client_xyz.provider.top-level-domain. Your provider updates his
DNS and you can access your PC using that name.
