DHCP works --- no ping/admin screen (win98)

Hi

I've re-installed Win98 onto a machine on my SOHO but can't get the
network working again.

I've a wireless router and 4 machines, 3 connected wirelessly and all3
used to work. The one I'm re-installing Win98 onto, has obviously
stopped. I have a strong signal to the wireless router.

I've been trying quite a few different things to sort it out.

Where I'm up to and can't seem to get beyond is that, to eliminate the
wireless aspect of the networking, I've a spare router which I've now
introduced put a wired connection to the machine which doesn't work and
am using the on-board LAN connection and this still isn't working.

The router is the dhcp server. I've set up the machine to see the dhcp
server and it does, and it is leased an ip address. I can release/renew
all day long and it works fine.

1) I ping the router from the pc and it does not respond.
2) I try an bring up the router admin screen from IE and it can't find it.
3) I've tried a static ip address (router->192.168.1.1, pc->192.168.1.2
on the same subnet) and the pc can't access the router.
4) I've wondered if there's a problem with IRQ conflicts as several
devices sharing the same IRQ as the on-board LAN card so I've disabled
all devices (in BIOS) which use that IRQ other than the on-board LAN
card as well as removed all cards in the expansion slots. The MOBO is an
ASROCK p4s61

To reiterate, this machine used to work fine and was part of the network.

Any help/suggestions would be gratefully received

Does this mean you are using 2 routers?
Have you connected them using Lan port to Lan port and not Lan to Wan.
Only 1 router can be used for DHCP so make sure it is disabled on one of
the routers.

First, check out what is in Network in the control panel. Post the list of
stuff here. Next, try:

ping 127.0.0.1
ping localhost
ping <whatever IP address your NIC is pulling>

If you can't ping yourself in all three of these ways, there is either a
poorly configured firewall in place or your TCP/IP stack is non functional.

I suggest you do a trace route in Windows command mode type tracert
<ip address> - this will trace the path and hopefully you will see the
problem. From experience I guess the gateway settings on one of the
machines is not configured correcty - thus the packet is going to the
destination machine you are pinging but the return path back to the
source machine is set incorrectly thus not recieving the PING reply.

1) Most won't if you've not set it to allow ICMP.
3) sounds like hardware/driver issue.
4) Possibly. Seen it in Compaq Deskpros.

fwiw, most SOHO routers that have selective ICMP disable only apply it to the
traffic coming into the router from the WAN side - not the LAN side.

eg: I have ICMP Response disabled on my Linksys router yet I have no problem
pinging the LAN side of the router...

Thanks for all your help.

I haven't bottomed this problem. I have however, sorted out the wireless
problem I was having and WEP was the culprit. Once this was disabled,
DHCP ping etc all work.

FYI, I have only one router on the network. but I did have a spare
linksys router which I wired up to the problematic PC. I still couldn't
get these talking.
