dhcp without network stack installed?

I've been using a proprietary tcp/ip stack here, on Linux 2.2. We're stuck
with this stack because of some other network functionality that we
require. One of the quirks of this proprietary stack is that it needs to
know it's IP address in order to even install the modules. This makes
conventional dhcp impossible, since the network stack needs to be installed
before the dhcp client can be run...

Are there any dhcp client modules available which will work without having
the network modules already installed?? That would be *really* handy for
me here...

My desktop machine, which has an Intel ethernet chip, actually handles the
dhcp lookup by itself, before the drivers are even installed, so it seems
that this should be manageable without too much trouble...
