DHCP started but not assigning IP's

Hi,

I have just installed a windows 2000 server and got all the components
installed and everything else, but alas the DHCP server isn't assigning
addresses. Here's my setup:

win2k PDC 192.168.0.100, 255.255.255.0 (mask)

scope: 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.99, 255.255.255.0 (mask)

..

I did have another DHCP server on the network, but I have taken it down. It
was a third party dhcp server from winroute and it done a good job but
before I started the new DHCP server on my win2k box I made sure to take the
existing one down.

It doesn't assign addresses and I've checked the event log and it just says
that the DHCP server has started. No errors or nothing. How do I check to
see if a DHCP server is actually working on a network?

Please help

Cheers
Mike

Make sure the scope is activated and that the server is authorized.

Have the client leases from the old DHCP server expired?

No they haven't yet... when I do an ipconfig /renew on the clients it says
"unable to contact your dhcp server"

That is because the clients are trying to directly contact the old DHCP
Server from which they obtained their current leases.
Try an ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew on one of the machines. The
/release will put it into a clean state where it should attempt to contact
any DHCP Server on the network.

Have done that but alas it still doesn't work.... and when I turn on a DHCP
server that one works... and when I stop it and remove it altogether from
the network and turn the one on my win2k server on, it still doesn't work.

is there perhaps anyway to find out if a DHCP server is working using a
command line util or 3rd party software... I want to test if the DHCP server
is actually working although it says so in services and there are no errors
whatsoever...

Well, you could capture the network traffic at the DHCP Server to determine
whether or not the requests are even reaching the DHCP Server.
