wep encryption off - assigned an IP address via DHCP
wep encryption on - connected to AP but DHCP server unavailable...why?

Laptop using an Orinoco silver pcmcia card (with client).
AP - netgear dg834g modem/router/ap

Without encyption the laptop is assigned an ip address via dhcp
(dg834g) and I can browse the net.

With encryption (wep encryption 64 bit and use a 5 ascii key - on
both) then I am not assigned an ip address - the dhcp server cannot be
reached. This happens with 2 laptops win98 and win 2000. Tried
rebooting laptops and ipconfig renew.
The dg834g sees the laptop connected to it ie I've a desktop connected
to the df834g and I can see the mac address of the laptop.

I also have a netgear usb wireless adapter. This works fine with
encyption and on both laptops.

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

You might try dropping in a static ip on the clients, then try to ping the
router. If you can't ping it, it will mean that you're not authenticating
with your key. Most wireless clients will show a connection, but won't get
anywhere if the key isn't correct. A static in the same subnet will let you
know if you're really connected.

I can verify that this has happened to me with Windoze XP, but not
with W98 or W2K. I never did find an answer to the problem. I fixed
one such problem by replacing a Linksys BEFW11s4 with a Netgear MR814.

The Orinoco driver that comes with W2K and XP are junk. Go to the
Proxim web pile and download the latest driver.

Nothing in the firmware release notes to show DHCP/WEP problems:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/support_...asp?dnldID=430
However, I would upgrade the firmware just to be sure.

That would tend to point to the Orinoco driver.

The problem is that WEP isn't setup correctly. Your laptops associate with
the router because you are (correctly) using open authentication. You can't
pass any data, though, because the keys don't match. This prevents you from
exchanging DHCP messages, so the laptops can't obtain IP addresses.

Are you entering the keys in the "key" field or in the "passphrase" field?
Are you being consistent with that?

I forgot to mumble something. When I had the same problem, I "solved"
the DHCP failure by assigning a static IP address to the laptop. I
then found that with WEP enabled, everything worked as expected.
Therefore, I ruled out a mis-typed WEP key as the probable culprit. I
still don't have a solution, but you might wanna try setting the IP
address, gateway, and DNS servers manually, and see if that
temporarily fixes the problem.

Found the solution. Instead of using wep with 5 chars eg abcde I am
using 10 hex chars eg 0123456789. And this works but as to why abcde
does not work, well I dont know (presumably abcdeabcde would work as
well).

The orinoco wlan card wep set up has a radio button ie select
5 ascii chars or
10 hex chars

The Netgear dg834g wlan setup does not have a select option but just
states either use
5 ascii chars or
10 hex chars

So you would have thought using abcde would work no? Both accept this
so presumably both see this as 5 ascii chars ie Netgear accepts this
whereas if you put abcdef it complains.

Thanks all for the help.
