I have a DHCP server in a child domain whos site will be disconnected from
the rest of the network for a long period of time due to it being in BFE in
Indonesia. The server was Authorized, however when the site lost connection
it became Unauthorized. I had to jump through hoops to get it Authorized
again. My question is, can I expect this to become Unathorized again and what
can I do keep it Authorized until the connection comes back up? It is a
Windows 2k3 Server sp2 and it is a member of a child domain. The AD
infrastructure is that there is a Forest root, with 3 child domains. Thanks
for the help.

Is there a DC for the dhcp server in the site? If the dhcp server cannot
contact a dc then it may well lose its authorization.

There are two DC's\GC's in the site. I added the child domain admin to the
Enterprise Admin group so it should be able to authorize the DHCP server from
here on out. Anything else I can do to help this situation, it has crashed 3
times on me now.

Strange. Does the dhcp server have its dns set correctly, i.e can it find
dc's and gc's from srv records in dns? Also is there another device that
could be performing dhcp services on the network because that might cause the
windwos one to stop.

It should be pointing to Corp for primary and secondary DNS and the other DC
for a teriary. I was told there is no other dhcp server on the network. What
exactly does it detect that could be killing dhcp because nothing else on the
network is handing out IP addresses. Is it possible that it is detecting a
non configured but active dhcp server on the fw/switch?

does the dhcp server actually become unauthorized or just stop, i.e. do you
have to reauthorize it? If it just stops it sounds like it is detecting
another dhcp server on the network. If it just randomly becomes unauthorized
then i can't say why that would be.

We had this same issue recently. We had a Windows 2003 server acting as a
DHCP server that was a member of our corporate domain and it was disconnected
due to an extended WAN outage and it stopped dispensing IP addresses. It
stopped about 48 hours after the outage occured. About 30 minutes after the
WAN connection was restored, the DHCP server again started to function.
Other than this dialogue, I've not been able to find any other documentation
or instances of this type of activity occuring.
Microsoft has documentation that you can use DHCP outside of a domian. But
my guess is that if the windows DHCP server is a member of a domain it cannot
be disconnected from that domain for an extended period of time without the
DHCP server ceasing to function.
