DHCP Server and Gateway Metric

Hello All,

We have a proxy server that is much less then reliable. It randomly hard
locks, and I'm sure it is a problem with the proxy server software that we
are using. Unfortunately we have 1 year left on the proxy servers SPAM
filter license. I am trying to avoid the frenzy of calls I get when the
server locks up, so I configured multiple default gateways in my DHCP
server. That way if the proxy server goes down everyones computer will
reroute to the next default gateway on the list. Unfortunately I noticed
that people are not receiving the gateways through DHCP in the order that I
configured them. They are bipassing the proxy and going directly to our
backup internet connection (cable). I believe that Windows is determining
that this connection is the fastest and automatically setting it to the
lowest metric. My question is how can I set the Gateway metric in the DHCP
server, so each machine will use each gateway in the order I configure them
to. It is only allowing me to select the order of the gateways. Any help
or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Dave

Proxy server clients do not use the default gateway settings to contact
the server. You contact a proxy server directly because the proxy server's
address is stored on the proxy client. A default gateway only comes into
effect if you are using a routed connection (such as to a NAT device or a
gateway router).
