DHCP Reservations

Hi,

Creating a new network in a new site...

I am using 2 DHCP servers for redundancy and have configured them as follows:

Server 1 Scope 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254
Exclusion Range 192.168.1.205 to 192.168.1.254

Server 2 Scope 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254
Exclusion Range 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.204

Now this is all working nicely.. however I want to start using some
reservations and am wondering if I put them on both servers, if for example I
have a reservation at ip 192.168.1.10 for example, but Server 1 is down, will
Server 2 be able to respond to the request, even though it is in its
exclusion range?

That's correct - reservations should be created on both servers...

Hi there --

Yes you should create the reservation on both DHCP servers, and the
reservation will work correctly even if it exists in an exclusion range.

James,

There was a post in the following group that I was trying to help with an
issue that the poster could not create a reservation in 2008 DHCP. I know
the thread was in the Windows 2000 group, but it was a Windows 2008 issue. I
though it was a problem with his migrating the DHCP database from 2003 to
2008. He didn't originally post it was in a split scope scenario, and I
didn't think of asking that question. However, he finally contacted PSS, and
they told him that because of the split scope, he could not create a
reservation on the one DHCP server that the IP did not fall in the scope
range on that server. Apparently it was something that was changed in
Windows 2008 DHCP:

I just thought to bring that to your attention, as well as to others
following this thread.

Thanks Ace! I wasn't aware of that change and I appreciate your bringing
this to my attention.
