DHCP Recovery

I have a network with about 100 Windows XP Pro desktops, and 4 Windows Server
2003 servers (2 DCs, 2 member servers). The "main" DC (it holds all of the
FSMO roles) is also my DNS and DHCP server. The secondary DC is a backup DNS
server, and a GC server.

My problem is, whenever I need to re-boot the "main" DC it loses all of the
DHCP leases. After restarting it, some of the desktops that were left running
end up with duplicate IP addresses as the DHCP server starts assigning those
adresses to newly turned on desktops.

Is there a way to run a secondary DHCP server, that retains the leases and
can give the information back to the primary when it reboots? Or, is there a
way to preserve the leases across a reboot of the DHCP server (although that
would only help with planned shutdowns, it would go a long way). Or is there
a better solution that I haven't thought of yet?

It is not an expected behavior. It could be cuased by the dhcp database.

With Dhcp Server running, do a netsh dhcp server dump >c:\temp.txt.

Please paste the content of the temp.txt

Hi!

Set "Conflict detection attempts" to value larger than zero, untill you
isolate your problem. It will prevent IP conflicts on your network.

I posted that my DHCP server loses it's leases when I re-boot it.

Hi,

In this file, search for a number 86400. this is the duration of the lease
in seconds. Modify it to 432000 and close this file.

Then, netsh exec c:\temp.txt back into machine. You may get lots of
messages saying options already exist, that¡¯s ok, it will end up appending
the new options in.

Restart the dhcp server

Check if it helps.

Few days back i installed ISA Server on my windows 2003 server, when i
installed it all services to network was stopped. i started all services but
the DHCP is not running, Even though i uninstalled the ISA server now also it
is not binding to the physical connection.

when i boot the machine it gives a error that one or more service or driver
failed to load.

many times i uninstalled & installed the DHCP service but it is not working.

for the first time when i uninstalled the DHCP and installed it again it
worked and again when i restarted the machine it stopped working.

The main problem for that problem is the DHCP server is not binding to the
Physical connection.

Plz help me out

Yah ISA is a full firewall and it will block all requests to protect itself.
You would have to open up ports to allow DHCP.

I suppose you'd need to open broadcast requests to be viewed.
Then dhcp assignement.

However I don't think typically most people set up DHCP on isa server
firewall.

Might be able to be done but I don't think it's best practices.
