DHCP problem with XP clients

To cut a long story short: a central freebsd-based machine provides a
DHCP server for my lan. Of four XP client machines, two currently have
fixed addresses, but I find that when I try to set for "automatic"
address setting there's no dhcp traffic on the lan at all (monitoring
done with wireshark on the server). Needless to say, they don't get an
assigned address. The two other XP machines work perfectly, and a fifth
freebsd client also works as expected.

I can see dhcp traffic on the lan for the three working machines.

I suspect there must be /something/ I've overlooked in the XP configs -
but I can't spot what. Isn't it just a matter of checking the two
"automatic" boxes on the tcp/ip properties page for the lan interface?

That should be it. You might just check the DHCP client service is running
as well...
... Some one might have disabled it as its not needed when you have fixed
addresses

Have you done an ipconnfig /release /renew?

Bingo. It was set to 'manual' and hadn't started. Knew it had to be
something glaringly obvious!

Obviously me, a /long/ time ago.
