DHCP preference

Hi All

I have 1 dhcp server that I use as my primary dhcp. I have another that I
would like to be a failover. They dish out mutually exclusive ranges.
My problem is, as is, most clients are getting a dhcp assignement from the
one I would like to be the second. So, How can I give these DHCP servers a
preference so all clients go to/receive an offer from my 1st DHCP server?
Then 2nd if no offer from 1st. Is this possible?

Regards

Craig

There isn't much you can do about that. The bootp/DHCP process is very
primitive. The client broadcasts on the LAN and a DHCP server replies with
an offer. The client will accept the first offer it receives.

Hello MRNews,

With Windows server 2008 R2 you can have a delay until a second server answers.

As Bill said,...it is very primitive.

Here is a very primitive solution. Stop the DHCP Service on the "2nd"
machine for a little while. Watch and refresh the Active Leases on the
"1st" one you want them to use as it climbs up. when you get enough using
the "1st" one that you want then start up the DCHP Service on the "2nd" one.

Once a Client gets an IP Config from a particular DHCP it will always go
back the the same DHCP Service everytime until it fails for some reason.
Clients will also always ask for the same IP everytime once they have had
one,...and they usually get the same IP# everytime unless, again, something
causes that the fail. Bottom line is that Clients always go to the same
place they went last time and always ask for the same thing they had last
time.
