DHCP Compatibility

I have a wireless network setup that has been working fine with two
laptops and two wireless access points. These two laptops have Linksy
pcmcia wireless cards in them. We have recently added to new Dell
laptops with built in Centrino wireless adapters.

If the new laptop is sitting right next to the access point it gets a
strong wireless signal. If the adapter is set for DHCP we have a
problem. The laptop only gets an ip address about one time in 20 when
set for dynamic. When it doesn't get an address - it eventually times
out and gets a 169.x.x.x. If I take a pcmcia card from an old laptop
and put it in the new laptop - voila - it gets an ip address. If I
set a static ip address for the wireless adapater then the laptop gets
on the network just fine.

Can you help.

Thanks,
Allen

I also have the exact same problem with my setup and Dell D400 laptop. Has
there been any resolution to the problem yet?

Negative. I spoke to Dell and I spoke to Linksys and guess what -
neither one had an idea of how to fix it. Not to sound to biased but
I really dislike those tech supt guys that spend the first 15 minutes
of the phone call repeating everything you told them.

Regards,
Allen

There may be a compatibility problem with the Centrino and some APs namely
Lys and D-Link which have not been updated. Also try setting your wi-fi to
"long" instead of "short." I say this because My Centrino worked fine on
every AP in town except one. Took a lot of digging to pin down the cause.
Do you have DNS enabled? L:uck.

Gator -

Can you expand a bit on what you really mean by
'setting my wi-fi' and by 'long' vs 'short'?

What's a 'wi-fi'? Long and short what? A noun to
go with those adjectives would be helpful.)

TIA...

Dave

Long and short refer to the preamble which
the unit sends to the AP when trying to connect.
It contains information which is needed. Default
is usually "long" which slows down data transmission
somewhat, but is more reliable under some conditions.
The defragmentation threshold can be set lower under
difficult conditions which may help some. It isn't
easy to solve these problems and as you say Tech
Support may not be any more advanced than the
rest of us. Cisco cards have the long/short options
and some others. You may see an option called
Ad Hoc power which if checked may help. Note:
I did not say select Ad Hoc vs Infrastructure
setup. But, if you have the Ad Hoc POWER
option selecting may provide an edge. Regards and
Luck.
