DHCP Clients getting lost....

I have about 4 XP Pro machines that suddenly stopped seeing the internet.
The Domain name changed from my old domain Name (BWORKGROUP) to my DNS
Domain Name (.Mycompany.com) I had to manuallyy change the domain back to
BWORKGROUP. Reboot and I flushed the DNS on the server
(I am running Standard Server2000)

I am thinking that it is because I do not have the reverse lookup Zones set
up.

Is there an article on how to set them up???

Please and thank you,
David Bock

What the domain name is or isn't doesn't affect getting to the Internet
(although it will affect local file sharing). What does matter is the
default gateway and how they use DNS.

How do these machines get their network config? If you configure them
manually, they can't just change it. Are they set to obtain their network
config automatically? If so, you may have more than one device on the LAN
doing DHCP.

Hi David,

Thanks for posting!

Based on the description, please help me know the exact meaning of
"suddenly stopped seeing the internet". Can I assume it cannot browse the
internet? Please double confirm if you can resolve name normally with
Nslookup.exe tool. What is the result? Do the DNS settings of client
machine have pointed to the DNS server?

For more information, please refer to the following article:
200525 Using NSlookup.exe

If there is anything that is unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks & Regards,

Jason Tan

The machines are doing it through DHCP running on a DC. I only have 1
machine that is configured to give out addresses.

The weird thing is that it was working until a week ago and a few computers
just got weird.

It all seems to work fine once I got rid of the DNS suffix and gave it the
old NT name...

I strongly suspect it is because I don't have Backward Lookup Zones setup.

Thanks for the help,
David Bock.

Hi Jason. Thanks. I have a work around in place (I changed the network name
to the pre win2k Domain Name, and since I am in a mixed environment it seems
to work fine. DNS would resolve fine on my internal network, but would not
resolve through my gateway. This was only happening on 4 computers. It is
weird. If the problem comes back, I will try using NSLOOKUP, and re-post.

I will also review the article on zones and setup the reverse lookup zones.

Thanks Again,
David Bock
