I am running win2k3 with 2 NICs. I have a Comcast modem connected to
the internet. My problem is that the connection to the LAN cannot get
any private addressing. It is just frozen on Acquiring Network
Address. I have unistalled and the installed DHCP, put a new NIC, new
switch, new cable, but LAN just cannot get any addresses. I checked
the Services, and I see DHCP Client service can't get started and
gives me Error 1079. Any ideas? By the way I do have a registered
domain.
Thanks.

Do you have a perimeter firewall/gateway appliance? If not, I suggest you
get one, and disable the 2nd NIC unless you use ISA or another proxy server
which reqiures it. Have the appliance do NAT. Have your server be....well,
just a server.

For one thing, you don't want to rely on your server to act as an ersatz
router - and for another, if you don't happen to have a static public IP on
the WAN-facing NIC, I think you'll run into major problems running a DHCP
server on this box.

For decent affordable firewall appliances, check out SonicWALL (or
WatchGuard - I'm not a huge fan but know many who like them).

I agree with the other post by Lanwench have a proper hardware
router/firewall do the adsl/firewall/routing function. Have the server with
just one NIC enabled on the local LAN, its a much neater way of doing things.
Along with the sonicwall reccomendation i would also recommend netscreen
firewalls, made by juniper.
One other thought though, is your dhcp server configured to hand out
addresses on both interfaces, if it is not working on one then check it is
bound to both interfaces? It sounds like it may not be servicing dhcp
requests on the interface your clients are connecting on.
Good luck
James.
