Hi!

I have a dhcp network with a webserver and severa linux audnwindows
clients.

dhcp is made by the router, so far. When I try to ping the webserver
machine from one of the windows hosts I get an "host not known" error.

The webserver has /etc/HOSTNAME set to "name", and I thought it would
transmit that to the dhcp network.

What am I doing wrong?

THanks!

That's not enough. You have to:

a) add the webserver record into the hosts file
in the windows computers (cannot remember the exact
location, maybe \winnt\drivers\etc\hosts), or

b) add a DNS proxy, e.g. dnsmasq, and point all
windows computers to it.

HTH

location is "%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts'
maybe, also check on the Linux system the file /etc/sysconfig/network --
check to see if the DHCP_HOSTNAME variable is populated with the system name

.... well, we run Slackware, and there's no such file as
"sysconfig/network". The closest is /etc/networks, which looks very
similar to /etc/hosts...
