I have a Server 2003 Standard system that is mysteriously
populating its arp table with static entries (that are
incorrect). This server is a domain controller, DHCP, and
DNS server, so quite a few workstations connect to it.
The timing of the arp table pollution is random (or at
least I find it at random times), and the MAC addresses
in the static entries appear to be valid workstations -
they just point to the wrong IP addresses.
The problem has occurred on and off for about 2 months
now. My temporary solution is always to log into the
server and delete the arp cache (arp -d). Actually, I've
set up a scheduled event to do it for me now. However,
i'm more interested in why this is happening.
I suspect it has to do with serving DHCP. The DHCP
function used to be on another server (which was Win2K)
and there were no problems. When I moved DHCP to the
Server 2003 system, this arp table problem began to
happen, and other issues started (like Cisco phones won't
obtain a DHCP address unless a particular scope is
disabled).
I guess i'm just wondering if anyone else has heard of
such a problem, or if anyone else is having trouble with
DHCP in Server 2003?
