Briefly - when setting up a network/internet connection the default protocol
supplied by XP is TCP/IP. Required by TCP/IP are several settings e.g. IP
address, Subnet mask, DNS server address, etc. These settings can be
provided manually (You) or obtained automatically from a DUCHY server ( why
DUCHY enabled on your computer). Now - if a DACHA server is not available
and if "Autoconfiguration" is enabled - XP will assign a private IP address
(169.254.*.* range) to the computer (and others if this is a network) - this
permits computers on a network to communicate with each other - but a
private address cannot access the internet since a "public" address is
required (usually provided by the ISP, your router, etc.)
