Hi!

I have a doubt. I have 2 gateways, 1 scope in Windows Server 2003, 1 subnet.
I want to set 1 gateway for some users and other gateway for other group of
users. Which are the steps to do it? Is there a document to follow? It's
just 1 subnet with 1 scope.

Best regards,

Futurist...

Hello Futurist,

You can not have 2 gateways in one subnet.

So the only way to give Internet to Dept. A by ADSL 1 and Internet to Dept.
B by ADSL 2, is assgining fixed ips to Dept. A and the rest dinamically?

Best Regards,

Futurist...

Hello Futurist,

Check out "dual band router" which are able to use more then one ADSL line.
You can also configure them depending on the model for load balancing or
specify the lines for some traffic.

What If I configure 2 differents scopes. In different subnets, I should use
a router to set 1 gateway for subnet A and one for subnet B, right?

Best regards...

No.

The LAN Router between the subnet needs to be the DFG of the clients in that
case and not the "firewall".

In a multi segment LAN only one LAN Router uses the Firewall as the
DFG,...everything else uses one of the LAN Routers as the DFG. If there is
only one LAN Router on the LAN then it is obvoius which Router to use. If
there is more than one LAN Router then that has to be determined by proper
network design.

Some routers,...if they are advanced enough (read $$$$),... they can do
Source Routing. With this the router will send the packets in a particular
direction based on what the originating Source IP is,...however that still
may only work with specified destiantions (which won't help you).

The root of your problem is your approach to the problem. The solution is
not "two internet connections",...generally that is the *beginning* of
problems, not the solution. The solution is to have a connection through an
ISP that is dependable and as fast as your requirements need it to be. That
is way ISPs (at least the ones worth staying in business) make such a big
deal about their SLA Agreements.

Your previous idea is simplest, and works well on our small AD-integrated
domain.

Assign default gateway A to the scope, then configure DHCP to assign
reserved IP addresses with gateway option for those clients who are to use
gateway B.

It is cleanest to reserve IPs from the in-scope set outside the DHCP
assignable pool.
This way you can make identical reservations on multiple DHCP servers.
