I'm thinking of getting one of these on eBay but many are Sky-logoed
(i.e. came with Sky broadband). I'm not with Sky. Is there ANY
difference when the DG834GT and the Sky verson? If there is, is it
important or can I happily use one of these?

Yes, they are different. The Sky one comes with firmware which does not
allow configuration of the DSL login. Unless you really know what you're
doing, use a retail version just for non-Sky and a Sky one just for Sky.

As a matter of interest, does a firmware flash remove the problem of linking only to
Sky?

I've not tried that but I guess yes and the hardware itself is identical.
But I would not know how to go the other way in order to get back to Sky's
firmware and settings after flashing the router to stock DG834GT issue.

Well I've just bought one from Ebay - due here tomorrow - and there was no
mention of Sky. If it is tied to Sky I'll be ever so slightly miffed that there
was no mention of it in the listing.

I'll post if and when I have had to flash it, on the outcome.

Thanks - hopefully yours will not be tied to Sky but if it is I'd be interested in
the outcome

If it is the sky branded version, download the latest firmware and the
recovery software from Netgear and follow the instructions to cure a
failed update. It does work and you then have a standard unit (apart
from the badging).

I'm still waiting ! It was advertised as 'refurbished' which I consider means
in 'as new' condition, not cosmetically, but operationally.

Well the one I've received is a DG834NAR - almost certainly intended for the US
market place. It is as new, certainly not connected to SKY in any way.

I've updated the Firmware to the lastest UK version 3.01.31 but it still seems
to want to initialise wth the US location.

One thing which concerns me, is that I want to disable the wireless facility but
though selecting ' wireless isolation ' briefly extinguishes the radio led....
after a few seconds, it re-appears. :-(

Can anyone say if leaving the aerial off will achieve the same effect ? i.e.
make it inaccessible by neighbours.

Apart from that, it's apparently working fine.

Andy

Wireless Isolation does not refer to turning the wireless off, it means that
any connected wireless clients are isolated from each other, ie they cannot
see each other on the network

You should have a setting that says 'Enable Wireless Access Point' Either
in the one of the menus. Untick/Uncheck the box and click apply at the
bottom of the screen. The wireless LED will then go out.

Not a good idea, as the system expects to see a matching load on the antenna
socket as with any RF device, it will see a mismatch without an antenna and
any RF will be returned to the RF stage making it run hotter than normal and
possibly resulting in damage to the RF stage over time. Its much better
just to turn the wireless output off.
