DG834G & SMTP issues on BTclick

Hihi,

This is a very weird issue, and I feel a bit dumb posting about it, but
I'm feeling rather stumped.

I installed a Netgear DG834G for a customer, who was previously using a
USB ADSL modem, late last week and she is now unable to send email. She
has a long-standing BTclick business account, and I have changed
nothing in her Outlook Express settings, only in the Windows settings
not to dial if a network connection is present.

Her configuration is to send via mail.btconnect.com & I also have
problems sending if I configure my Mac to use that as my SMTP server.
On Outlook Express on her machine the connection times out, however on
my Mac I get an error message immediately. In Outlook Express on the
customer's machine I have tried sending both authenticated & otherwise.

The weird thing is that if I telnet to mail.btconnect.com on port 25 it
answers immediately, and looks just like an SMTP server should
(although I haven't tried any SMTP commands to it, as I can't remember
any of them). I have postfix installed locally on my Mac, and if I send
via that then messages go through fine, so I can't see that it's
therouter blocking port 25, or anything.

BT technical support maintain that the account is fine if they try it
from their end, and are generally chocolate fireguard all round. They
require me to uninstall anti-virus from the customer's machine, which
I'd really rather avoid doing; I can appreciate that they don't want to
troubleshoot issues with a Mac & a PC simultaneously, and that the
coincidence in such things is higher than one might expect, but
something genuinely spooky is occurring here, and the only thing I can
see that's changed is the addition of the Netgear ADSL router.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please..?

I've had this too, try setting it to 'never dial a connection' rather than
'not to dial if network present', it worked for me!

Naw, it's not that. In fact I checked & the configuration is as you describe.

AFAICT OE *is* contacting the server, but the connecttion is just
stalling somehow. For more wierdness, the message goes through fine if
it has no body, and is headers & subject only.

Frankly, I'm getting f****d off with it. I think I might just cheat &
install <http://www.helpbytes.co.uk/smtp/index.php>

Argosoft do a free smtp server too, even has a webmail interface.

Something strange I have found is that I constantly get timeouts since
I've moved to ADSL (11 months now). I have two email servers, one is
a pop3 server from my ISP, the other is the pop3 that comes from my
domain name supplier. With my BTOW dial up service both always worked
first time. Since I moved to Demon ADSL I often get timeouts when
first checking email and then have to clear the error and try again -
it always works second time (except when the server is genuinely
down).

Of course the ISP pop server is different (now Demon, previously BTOW)
but my domain supplier is still the same and the problems started
immediately I moved to broadband. At first I was using an Alcatel USB
modem and now a DG834G and it made no difference.

Try smtp.btconnect.com and rememebner to authenticate.
